Vote with Your Wallet: 15 Brands Fighting for Women's Rights Around The World

Happy Women’s Equality Day! Today is celebrated to remember the 19th amendment giving women in America the right to vote. While a lot of progress has been made, it’s also important to remember there is a lot of work to be done! There is still a lot of discrimination with voting for certain genders, races, & communities. The fight for equality extends beyond the U.S., all over the world there are women experiencing daily discrimination due to their sex & race. Being The Honest Consumer, I want to remind you of the power you hold as a consumer. When you choose to purchase from ethically made and fair trade brands, you’re voting (with your wallet) for equality. It is estimated that 80% of the garment industry is made up of women. Unfortunately there is a lot of abuse within traditional fast fashion garment factories and this abuse directly impacts women due to the large percentage of workers. Your purchase to support brands who use ethical and fair trade practices empowers women around the world. This gives women the opportunity to earn a fair wage and support their families. I highly encourage reading this short piece, Gender: Women Workers Mistreated from the Clean Clothes Campaign, to learn a bit more about what women in the garment industry experience. Choose ethical fashion & vote with your dollar.

Dear America, It's Time to Listen

The level of hate in our country is unacceptable. Absolutely disgraceful. We all have an extraordinary opportunity to learn from people who are different that us. There is power and knowledge in listening to the stories of others. People different than you….different political opinions, different colors of skin, different backgrounds, different social classes, different sexual orientations. There is a lot I will never fully understand, but over the years I’ve at least made an effort to try and learn from the experiences of people different than me by getting out of my bubble. I don’t claim to be an expert of these matters, but I’ve seen my views on the world (especially America) shift.

A Few Thoughts to Ponder as You Celebrate The 4th of July

Happy Fourth of July! A day to celebrate independence and freedom. To be honest I’m having a difficult time celebrating freedom today because there are people in our country locked in detention camps. It’s heartbreaking and inhumane especially in a country that claims to be “land of the free & home of the brave.” And while I am incredibly grateful for those who have fought for our freedom, it seems the social construct of America still has a ways to go in freedom and equality for everybody.

Basically microplastics are what they sound like…tiny pieces of plastic. Clothing made with synthetic fibers such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic have plastic in them. Conscious Consumerism Isn't About Perfection

Quite often I see ethical fashion bloggers post wardrobes like the one pictured. A perfectly curated clothing rack of ten or so items at first it made my feel like I was doing this conscious consumerism thing wrong, but now after years in the ethical fashion scene it makes me laugh. I’ve accepted that will never be my wardrobe and that’s okay. My closet is a hot mess. Confession I despise doing laundry (I justify it by telling myself the less laundry I do the better for the planet ;) so there are clothes spread out. I have a lot more than ten pieces of clothing in my wardrobe. I like supporting ethical clothing brands that are making positive change and it keeps my wardrobe exciting. Minimalism isn’t really my style….I love fun prints and bold colors.
