Flowers are a staple gift on Valentine’s day, but not all flowers are as sustainable as you may think.

If they’re brought in from far away, this can create a larger environmental impact. Plus, being aware of the pesticide use on flowers is important.

4 Tips for Choosing Sustainable Valentine’s Day Flowers

Here are four ways to make sure you choose eco-conscious flowers for your loved one.

Support Local Farms

I’m lucky to live in a city with year round farmers markets. I love going to find fresh flowers are the farmers market. This is a great way to shop seasonal flowers and support local farms in your area.

If you don’t have access to a farmers market consider looking up flower farms in your area and see if they have anything. I think locally sourced flowers make bouquets even more meaningful.

Choose Seasonal Flowers

Even if there aren’t any farms in your area, you can look up what flowers are in season and find them at your local grocery store.

Look for Certifications

Flowers can also carry certain sustainability certifications. A few to look for include:

Avoid Plastic Packaging

A lot of bouquets come wrapped in plastic. If you’re able to opt for paper wrapping or a glass vase, this is a low waste option that will make your flowers more eco-conscious.
