Why I Think Trends Are Uncool

Call me uncool, but I hate trends. From the pressure to buy more to the urge to keep up, being trendy is not for me.

4 Reasons Why I Hate Trends

Let’s dive into why I don’t like trends.

The Never Ending Push to Buy More

A lot of trends are rooted in capitalism and getting us to buy new things for every season. This is especially common in fashion trends.

Shop small instead of trendy! Top from KNOWN SUPPLY and organic sweats from MATE.

There is a huge push to have what is in style for the season and with 52 microseasons, it’s become too much. This can also produce excess waste pushing people to throw out the old and bring in the new.

Not Enough

The advertising and language around trends often makes consumers feel like what they have isn’t enough or like they’re living their life wrong.

The stuff you have isn’t enough. Your skin isn’t clear enough. Your routine isn’t maximizing your time well enough.

I think it’s cool to value what you have and do what’s best for you instead of hopping on board the latest trend.

Fast Paced Living

I think a lot of people feel the urge to keep up. Whether this is keeping up with the latest social media trends before they die off or keeping up with the latest fashion or beauty trends, this can push a fast paced life style.

As someone who values slow living, this isn’t how I want to feel.

Less Individuality

When everyone is hopping on the same trends and doing the same thing, there is less individuality. Think how everyone shops at the same big name brand stores and buys a lot of the same clothes that are deemed in style.

Some people do get creative and do their own take on trends which I respect.

Even though I don’t like trends, there were two social media trends I hopped on in the past couple years. I did vibe with the underconsumption trend. Even though that’s not trendy anymore, I still think it’s cool.

And more recently I did a conscious consumerism take on the kinda chic trend.

This is just your reminder not to give into something just because it’s trendy. Make sure you actually like the trend or that it matches your values.
