How to Make Easy DIY Halloween Garland with Upcycled Boxes

I’m not a crafty person, but I had some empty food boxes laying around and I decided to get creative instead of recycling them.

I upcycled these empty food boxes and made a super simple Halloween garland!

This is easy to do no matter your skill level! It could also be a great sustainable craft for kids to learn about upcycling.

How to Upcycle Food Boxes into Festive Halloween Garland

Here are the step by step instructions on how to make this eco-friendly decoration.

Step 1: Cut Boxes & Trace

Cut your empty food boxes, so that they lay flat. Then start tracing your shapes onto the boxes. I used cookie cutters and traced a pumpkin, ghost, and bat.

Step 2: Cut

Cut out the shapes that you traced to make this eco Halloween decor start coming to life.

Step 3: Add Color

If your boxes had a white inside, you can use markers and add festive colors. If your boxes were a different color, you can use paint to create a more vibrant appearance. I used Halloween colors including orange, black, and yellow.

Step 4: String

Punch a hole in the top of each shape and start stringing them along.

I tied a loose knot at the top of mine to keep it in place, but allowing a bit of movement, so I could adjust the placement when I went to hang it.

Step 5: Hang it up

I used a small amount of scotch tape to attach this to the mantel of our fireplace.
