How to Avoid Greenwashing Brands This Earth Day?
It’s definitely hard to know if a brand actually cares about their impact on the planet, but here are a few things you can look for when the Earth Day marketing promos pop-up to avoid greenwashing.
Production: Make sure the company is not mass producing products as this shows they’re more focused on over producing for profit than the environmental impact of using resources to create more stuff. Try to look for companies that focus on made to order or small batch production. Avoid brands that mass produce and then create conscious or sustainable collection as brands that have no intention of slowing production and plan to constitute mass production are not sustainable.
Materials: Consider the environmental impact of the materials the company uses. Try looking for organic, natural fibers, recycled, biodegradable, compostable, and consider where the materials are sourced from. Also consider the packaging materials….does it come with biodegradable or compostable packaging?
Sustainable Business Practices: What are the practices within the supply chain? Carbon offsets, solar power, closed loop systems? Be wary of brands that just purchase carbon offsets and don’t use sustainable materials or production practices as simply purchasing offsets can be a form of greenwashing.
Hopefully this guide has helped you learn what to look for in greenwashing marketing campaigns and sales for Earth Day and discover some sustainable brands to support if you’re shopping Earth Day sales.
