Why I LOVE Working With Small Businesses

Shopping small and local is a great way to take part in socially responsible shopping, ethical fashion, and mindful living. Don’t be afraid to reach out to brands and get to know who you’re buying from. One of my favorite ways to do this is by going to local vendor and craft fairs.

If you haven’t already heard by now…there is an Instagram crisis. Influencers, celebrities, and many other Instagram accounts have lost a decent chunk of followers the past two days due to a bug. For me, I lost a few hundred followers which sadly took away the 10K I worked so hard to finally reach, but mine was minor compared to some of the other accounts that lost thousands.

How did you get so good at social media? This is a question I get ALLLL the time. The answer is pretty straight forward. I just did it.

Reminders & Reflections from the 2018 Fair Trade Fashion Show

Back in November I had the honor of attending the Fair Trade Fashion Show in Los Angeles. It took me about a month, but I’m finally sitting down and reflecting. The Fair Trade Fashion Show was a magical event. It was wonderful to see so many fashion activists, change-makers, and creatives in one place. f

Finding Focus During the Holidays as a Creative

Lately I’ve been struggling to find steady focus. There are so many things that need to be done around this time of year. Between working to write content for The Honest Consumer, fulfilling orders for Give a Damn Goods, starting to plan our sustainable wedding, and all the holiday shopping and festivities, I’ve been struggling to keep up.

Small Business, Anxiety, & E-mails

Any other small business owners struggle with anxiety? E-mail can be tricky for me….I tend to take everything personally and overthink every little thing. Often times people make entrepreneurship look glamorous and for me, and so many, it’s a battle everyday. Balancing work, personal life, & mental health is incredibly hard. Some days are hard and that’s okay.

Everyday is a Day to Celebrate Small Businesses

Happy Small Business Saturday! What a day to celebrate creatives, entrepreneurs, innovators, change-makers, and risk takers!

Running a small business is quite the journey. The day to day tasks present joys, challenges, and struggles. You never know what the day will throw at you. Small business owners wear a lot of different hats…typically more than they’d like to. They play the role of manager, content creator, accountant, graphic designer, web management, social media management, and so much more...all in a days work. Spoiler…most days I have no idea what I’m doing or how to play 90% of the roles I have to play, but overtime I’ve learned to go with the flow with a “fake it til you make it” mentality.

Let Go & Let Life: A Full Circle Journey

Sometimes the universe knows your path better than you do and puts you in the right place at the right time, surrounds you with the right people, and presents you with opportunities you didn’t even know you needed. That’s how it’s been for me. It’s funny to see the pieces come together for me. And I feel very fortunate and blessed. I’m at that uncomfortable age where half my friends are still trying to figure it out which is 100% OKAY! People think you have to have it all figured out and that’s NOT it! Embrace the journey and let the universe take control…you never know where it will take you. As an anxious control freak I know that’s easier said than done , but if this little story I’m about to tell isn’t full circle…I don’t know what is.

Instagram Rant & What Entrepreneurs Can Learn

Don’t get me wrong I love Instagram. It’s really helped me grow The Honest Consumer community and for that I’m thankful, but lately I’ve been chatting with some other small business owners and the latest algorithm changes have really got us beat down. Our likes and interactions don’t match up with the amount of followers because we’re not paying to play. I think it’s really sad. Instagram was, at one point in time, a tool for small businesses to grow, but now it’s another pay-to-play social media.

3 Ways to Support The Honest Consumer

This post may seem self centered, haha, but quite often I get people asking how they can show their support. Honestly it means a lot. I’m not at a point where I can take a steady salary yet, so support from followers is greatly appreciate. Not necessarily financial support, but spreading the word really helps grow our community!

Why Actual Conversation is So Important for Social Entrepreneurs

Yes, I’m a blogger. And yes, a lot of my work can be, and is, done through e-mail. But I think it’s so important to take some extra time to build genuine relationships with the brands I’m working with. E-mail can be so impersonal and makes my work feel distant. For the majority of the brands I work with I make the extra time to have an actual conversation. If the brand is local to where I’m living (or have lived) I meet with the founder in person. If the brand is not local, I chat with the founder or a team member over the phone.
