How did you get so good at social media? This is a question I get ALLLL the time. A lot of people my age are going into marketing, communications, and social media management fields, so I get this question from students, friends, family, and small business owners probably at least once a week. The answer is pretty straight forward. I just did it.
I wasn’t a marketing, communications, or social media major. In fact when I started The Honest Consumer I had no idea what the heck I was doing and never thought it would be something I could monetize. But I was an entrepreneurship major….so I like taking (controlled risks bc anxiety) and figuring things out. So I just started writing, posting, and taking careful notes about what was working, what people responded to, and learning. While many students were studying (what I stayed up late every night doing), I was teaching myself valuable skills by doing. In college I was on the computer all the time…. I was writing, reading about social media, learning effective strategies, watching webinars, and a few years later here I am…..I genuinely think deep down that the BEST way to learn is by doing. There is only so much you can learn from other people and in a classroom. Sometimes you have to figure it out for yourself. I’ve been doing hardcore social media for almost three years now and I’m still learning everyday. But I was able to use the skills I learned from “doing” to launch my online shop Give a Damn Goods.
So what’s the secret? As I said before, you really just have to do it. You have to get to know your audience. Take careful notes on what has high engagement rates. Keep up with the social media trends. People don’t understand social media is a FULL TIME JOB. No, you can’t just post random stuff inconsistently and get insta-famous. While social media seems easy, it’s really hard. It takes time and it’s something I still don’t fully understand. But to start understanding, you have to start doing.
After the first of the year I think I’m going to begin doing some online courses to share some of the methods I’ve used, what I’ve learned, the mistakes I’ve made, and more. As much as I love receiving messages with questions about social media, sadly I don’t have time to address case by case situations! BUT I do want to help!
