Acacia Creations: Connecting Consumers & Makers Through Fair Trade Jewelry

Acacia Creations creates sustainable employment opportunities in developing communities through empowerment and the creation of fair trade jewelry.

At the young age of 23, Acacia Creations founder, Maura was living in Kenya working in East Africa’s refugee camps. During Maura’s time in Kenya she witnessed poverty firsthand. She learned how the act of giving and donating provides immediate relief, but does not have a lasting impact. Maura quickly realized the locals needed sustainable employment opportunities to be able to support themselves long term. While Maura was immersed in the culture and learning about poverty in Kenya, she loved to support the locals by browsing the markets. She was inspired by the talent, traditional craft, and hearts of the makers. Maura wanted to provide these makers with access to a larger market. She began bringing products back to the U.S. to provide the artisans with more market exposure and the venture evolved into Acacia Creations.

Maura still lives in Kenya and continues her hands on work with artisans. Over the years Acacia Creations has been able to expand to empower artisans in other parts of the world including India, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Uganda. Acacia Creations employs artisans directly and collaborates with established artisan groups to empower existing maker initiatives. Acacia Creations has worked with over 1,000 artisans so far and is continuing to expand.

As members of the Fair Trade Federation, Acacia Creations values the overall growth of their artisan partners. Acacia Creations provides opportunities for makers to expand their own  entrepreneur skills by providing interest free loans and by sponsoring classes artisans feel will be valuable. Acacia Creations continues to give back through their incubator for other artisan groups which gives space to groups who might not be able to typically afford a workspace.

A lot of the jewelry crafted by artisans in developing countries  is unique because their artistry is born out of necessity. In developing communities makers value what they have by recycling products and repurposing materials. Acacia Creations encompasses these elements in their design by using sustainable and recycled materials when possible.

Recently I was able to try out a few new items from Acacia Creation’s fall collection! I’m in love with the free-spirit style of their fall collection. The Hammered Brass Rectangle Leather Bolo Necklace is the perfect necklace for this season. The neutral colors allow you to pair this beauty with all the bold fall colors. And there are SO many ways to style the Bolo Necklace. Wrap it loosely and let the brass pendant hang for a sophisticated look or wrap it around a few times more for a choker style necklace.  This gorgeous piece is affordable, well made, and crafted using 100% repurposed materials including a hand-cut and hammered recycled brass pendant with a suede cord. I’ve also been wearing the Sky Blue Paper Bead Lariat Necklace. I love how the dainty brass chain pops with the slight burst of light blue from the paper beads. This length of this necklace makes it perfect for pairing with any v-neck tops of dresses. This lovely piece is handcrafted in Kenya, coating each paper bead in a clear, non-toxic lacquer to make this necklace as durable as it is beautiful. I highly encourage you to check out Acacia Creations. Their jewelry is very well made and their price point is great! You are sure to love their new fall collection.
