Music That Makes a Difference: Songs Against Slavery

Songs Against Slavery hosts benefit concerts to raise awareness of human trafficking and raise funds for their partnering non-profits.

Songs Against Slavery’s passionate co-founders, Grace and Lauren met in high school. As the two set out for separate colleges in Michigan, they did not expect to become co-founders of a non-profit. When the two friends returned home from their first year of college Grace expressed concerns about an article she had read pertaining to sex trafficking. Grace felt called to take action and address the ongoing issue with her passion for music.

BANDED: Hair Ties That Give Back

Each BANDED product provides three meals for a child in Uganda, Latin America, or the Caribbean.

BANDED was inspired by a gap in the market place of headbands causing headaches. When BANDED was first designing their headbands, the team figured out a mechanism to fit children and adults pain free. This led to an innovative patent on BANDED’s headbands which have intricate pockets on the side of the headbands allowing for comfort and stability.

The BANDED team wanted to do more than just make a good product. They wanted to make an impact.

Kateri: An Artist Rising Above Poverty

“I want to see the beauty in everyone because everybody has something to offer.” Wise words from my new friend Kateri, a 65 year old woman who has experience more than I could ever imagine and is changing the world with her art.

This wonderful, incredibly strong lady has experienced sexual abuse, drug abuse and homelessness. She does not let her past define her, her positive outlook on life inspires me. Throughout Kateri’s journey her art and faith have always been stable aspects of life. Kateri expressed that these two elements go hand in hand for her. Art is a spiritual experience, allowing her to use her God given gift to create something of her own.

Botanical Harmony

Good things come in small packages! Just look at how beautiful these soaps are! They smell wonderful too! Botanical Harmony goat milk soaps are one of my favorite products.

I met a few lovely ladies from the farm, in Nashville last fall, and I love the values of Botanical Harmony Farm. This family farm in Tennessee is working towards self-sustainability. They raise goats, chickens, and grow a variety of plants and herbs. All of the products they sell are all natural made with raw materials from their farm. The goat milk soaps are made with chemical free goat milk. The farm goats are fed a non-GMO diet and treated with herbal medicines. The soaps are colored with plant sources, clay, or charcoal and scented with essential oils and butter, some of which are organic.

My absolute favorite soap scent is Rosemary Lavender Sea Salt. It is a relaxing scent and I love how it feels on my skin. A few of my other favorite scents are the Orange Chai Spice and the Eucalyptus Mint Sea Salt. The Unscented Oatmeal is a life saver if you tend to have sensitive skin. There are so many wonderful scents, I always have trouble picking which one to buy. Treat your skin right and use all natural soaps!

While I can find Botanical Harmony Farms at various vendor fairs around Nashville, you can also order their soaps online. Not only do these soaps smell amazing, but they are beautiful too, making them wonderful gifts. Botanical Harmony also carry candles, body scrubs, lip care, and more.

WOW! Soap and Humphreys Street

The Nashville based non-profit, Harvest Hands has created two social enterprises providing hope and changing the lives of teens in South Nashville. “WOW! Soap” and “Humphreys Street Coffee” provide training and employment for junior high and high school students in this Nashville community. This training creates a can-do mindset for the teens by teaching them valuable life skills.

These programs give youth a fair paying wage and a positive environment to thrive in. Typically, teens come in after school to complete their designated tasks. In the summer, when these young employees have more free time, they are also able to participate in fitness, cooking, and business classes in addition to doing their jobs. These programs keep teens busy learning new skills, and creates strong bonds within the group.
