Thistle Farms sells home & body products created by the survivors of addiction, prostitution, and human trafficking. The strong women of Thistle Farms go through a wonderful program to help them heal and recover. Alongside a supportive community and a positive environment these ladies are moving forward in a confident manner.
Becca Stevens started Thistle Farms back in 1997. After speaking with some women living on the streets, she wanted to take action. Becca put these women in housing and provided them with the resources needed to remain clean and start over. As the Thistle Farms motto states “Love Heals,” Becca believed in order for these women to heal she needed to help improve all aspects of their lives, not just providing jobs or shelter, but also providing love, encouragement, and other resources needed to succeed. Today, the residential program is known today as Magdalene.
Magdalene allows these women to have the time and care they need to recover. Women are connected with therapy, opportunities to get their GED, medical attention, and more. Classes are offered on childcare, financial management, etiquette, and other skills for these women to lead successful lives. Survivors are employed by the social enterprises of Thistle Farms. Women may have jobs such as creating the home and body products, office administration, sales, or working in the cafe. The working environment is positive and encouraging, while the community is incredibly supportive. I had lunch with Dorris, one of the graduates from the program. She was so passionate about her job, I could tell Thistle Farms is a wonderful work environment.
The Thistle Farm Shop is located in Nashville and carries an abundance of products such as lotions, candles, healing oils, teas, and more. Thistle Farms products are all natural and made by survivors. Next door is the Thistle Farm Café which serves delicious food, coffee, tea, and pastries. Dorris shared some fun facts about the café.
-The cabinets were built by men from the prison.
-The floor was made from wood from an old barn, that was stained with coffee and tea.
-The chandeliers are made from tea cups. The tea cups have been sent from people all over the world sharing their stories.
Although Thistle Farms is located in Nashville, they have partnerships all over the United States in order to educate survivors and connect them with the resources needed.
Thistle Farms has an 87% success rate, which is based on the number of women remaining clean after two years. So far Thistle Farms has helped over 350 women, but with a success rate this high, I know Thistle Farms is going to help many more. I encourage you to support Thistle Farms by shopping online or visiting their café, if you’re local to Nashville. The food is excellent!!
Please stay tuned! I will be sharing Dorris’ inspirational story later in the week!
